Brief Notes-Manager's Meeting 3/28/2013

1. New Hires:
Neighborhood Library Administration has received survey feedback from newly hired employees at some locations concerning negative behaviors and attitudes displayed by tenured staff members. Meller Langford stated those behaviors and attitudes will not be tolerated in the Houston Public Library, and reported staff members will be called into her office. Negative statements and gossip are unproductive and demoralizing.
Remember we were all new employees at some point, and those initial experiences created our impression of the Houston Public Library as an organization. Each of us needs to be wiling to extend ourselves to  welcome and help train. We want to show ourselves to be people-friendly and tech-savy.

2. Announcements:
Please commit to memory. Apparently it may be a question put to you  during  a Director Chat or Meller's Town Hall Meetings.

Houston Public Library's New Vision Statement

HPL is a vital member of a dynamic and diverse local, national and global community.

Houston Public Library's New Mission Statement

We link people to the world.

3. Internet Slowness:
Issues continue at all locations. We have been asked to keep a record & report to IT & cc to Elva in NL Admin. Dean has created a spreadsheet that we can scan/email to every morning. They are looking for patterns of in the reported problems. It is really important to report the Kronos issues on the spread sheet.

4. Posted Hours of Operation:
Communications staff will be visiting all locations to stencil hours on the entry doors.

5. PIO Office
Revised Media Guidelines were distributed by Sandra Fernandez. I will make copies for our staff. Two key statements from the morning: Please read them as there are some changes.
1. Visits by media- Call all four numbers on the list and leave messages if necessary. Also
contact the Neighborhood Library office and absolutely speak with one of the NL Leaders. Do not just leave a message.
 2. Participants at HPL programs or in the library building may not take photos/film even with cell phones that show the person's face. Only parents may sign the consent form allowing photographs for minors, not other relatives or nannies. Staff are to make a general announcement at programs and have the forms available. We can discuss as a group at the next staff meeting as this applies to teens using their cell phones to film/photograph their friends inside the building. We are to ask them to stop. If they do not, we must ask them to leave the building.
