As reported in the Houston Chronicle, Mayor Parker has allotted funds to hire 109 new staff for HPL. Neighborhood Libraries will receive 82 of these new hires, 56 of those will be 20 hr. part-time staff. The new hiring will provide the minimum number of staff to all locations to resume services on Saturdays .It is possible that a few locations may not be staffed to open by the published April 1st date, but every effort is being made to accomplish that. HPL and HR are planning to implement express-hiring in which the selected applicants will be informed at the point of final interview that they are hired. Applications will be screened, selected applicants will participate in a telephone interview as part of the screening process. Based on the telephone interview screening, selected applicants will be invited to a live interview "event". Successful applicants will be hired that day. New part-time staff will be hired knowing that evenings and every Saturday is mandatory. Bilingual pay cannot be offered. Over the past two years HPL/HR received 1200 applicants for every job posting. Training for the new staff is being created and coordinated by Suzy Benton. Similar to the training for substitute staff, it will take place partly at Central and partly at a Neighborhood Library(hands-on).
The private funds that make possible the substitute program will hopefully be replenished.
Please take a close look at the wording of the applications - skill sets and behaviors. These are expected of all staff. Customer Service is going into high gear to increase our service advantage and competitive edge. We want HPL on Houston's radar as a go-to destination for information, technology, programming... Copies of "Five Expected Behaviors for Good Customer Service" will be distributed this week. Sara posted some terrific tips earlier. Others may have ideas to share. Brainstorm & implement. Remember the story of "Just give them the pickle"!
